The African Diamond Producers Association (ADPA) and the Harry Oppenheimer Diamond Training School (HODTS) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to strengthen education and technical skills across Africa’s diamond sector through a three-year collaboration focused on training, curriculum development and industry best practice.
The agreement establishes a framework for joint work on specialized training programs, diamond evaluation, processing and trade, alongside initiatives intended to support skills development throughout the diamond value chain.
Focus on Technical Expertise
Under the partnership, ADPA and HODTS will work together to develop educational programs and promote best practices across the industry. Planned activities include workshops, seminars and research projects designed to strengthen technical expertise and encourage knowledge sharing.
The collaboration also places emphasis on local beneficiation by supporting the development of skills in diamond evaluation, processing and trading. Expanding technical capability within producing countries has become an increasing priority for many African governments and industry organizations seeking to retain more value from natural resources.
For jewelers and businesses operating further along the supply chain, improvements in technical training and professional education could help support greater consistency in grading, valuation and manufacturing practices across producing markets.
Three-Year Agreement
The MoU will initially run for three years, with biannual review meetings scheduled to assess progress and consider opportunities to expand the scope of the partnership.
According to ADPA, the agreement is intended to strengthen technical expertise across the continent while supporting value addition, sustainable economic development and employment within the African diamond sector.
Shared Vision for the Sector
Neil Rademeyer, director of HODTS, said: “Education has always been the greatest catalyst for transformation. This partnership represents a shared vision between ADPA and the HODTS: that Africa should be known not merely as the source of diamonds, but as the home of world-class expertise, innovation and excellence throughout the entire diamond value chain.”
The agreement reflects an ongoing focus within the natural diamond sector on developing local skills and expanding expertise beyond rough diamond production. Education and technical training are expected to remain important areas of investment as producing countries seek to increase participation across more stages of the diamond value chain.
