A violent attempted robbery at Marcos Jewellers in Pietermaritzburg’s Parklane Centre on Thursday left the store owner and two suspects critically injured.
The confrontation, which involved armed suspects and a response from the jeweller’s son, occurred during business hours and has raised further concerns about security in our industry.
The Incident: An Attempted Armed Robbery
According to police reports, the attempted heist began when one suspect entered the jewellery store posing as a customer. The store owner, accompanied by her son, engaged with the individual before he allegedly drew a firearm and opened fire on them.
A second suspect entered the premises shortly after, also armed. The jeweller’s son responded by firing shots that left both suspects critically injured. The store owner sustained four gunshot wounds to the abdomen and remains in critical condition.
Immediate Response
Local police and emergency services arrived promptly at the scene. The two injured suspects were transported to hospital under police custody, while the store owner was taken to a medical facility for urgent care.
Eyewitnesses reported on the confrontation, noting the jeweller’s son’s response as instrumental in addressing the situation. Police are continuing their investigation to determine whether the suspects are connected to other criminal activity in the area.
Security Risks for Jewellers
The incident underscores the risks faced by jewellery retailers, who are often targeted for their high-value inventory. Retailers may wish to assess their security protocols, such as staff preparedness, surveillance measures, and collaboration with law enforcement.
Advanced deterrents, including alarm systems and panic buttons, have been implemented by some businesses, though maintaining a safe yet approachable environment is an ongoing concern. This event serves as a reminder of the importance of proactive security planning in the jewellery industry.
Ongoing Investigations
Authorities are actively investigating the case to uncover any potential links between the suspects and other crimes. Law enforcement has urged jewellers in the area to remain vigilant and report any suspicious behaviour near their premises.
