A jewellery store at Vincent Park Mall in East London, South Africa, was the target of an armed robbery on Thursday, involving nine masked suspects. High-value items, including jewellery and watches, were taken. The South African Police Service (SAPS) has confirmed that the case is now being handled by the Provincial Serious Crime Investigation Unit.
Incident Overview
Police spokesperson Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana stated that the suspects, wearing face masks and gloves, entered the store during operating hours and forced staff members to the ground.
“The manager of the store managed to press the panic button which caused smoke all over the store,” said Gantana. “The suspects were not disturbed by the smoke.”
The suspects removed stock from the premises and also disarmed a security guard, taking a 9mm pistol loaded with 18 rounds.
Escape and Firearm Discharge
The group fled the scene in a white Volkswagen Jetta and a Toyota Corolla. During their escape, they encountered a boom gate and reportedly fired at a pursuing security vehicle.
“Fortunately, the driver took cover, and the bullet missed him, hitting the bonnet and windscreen of the security vehicle,” Gantana said.
The suspects continued toward the Cambridge area, where another round of gunfire was reported as a security officer attempted to pursue them. No injuries were reported.
Police Investigation
A case of business robbery, robbery with a firearm, and two counts of attempted murder has been opened. The case has been transferred to the Provincial Serious Crime Investigation Unit for further investigation. Police have indicated that arrests may be imminent and have urged anyone with information to come forward.
Security Implications for Jewellers
The incident points to the continued risk of armed robbery in retail jewellery environments. Despite the activation of a smoke security system and the presence of security personnel, the suspects proceeded with the robbery, indicating a planned and forceful approach.
The event raises considerations for jewellery businesses in similar retail environments regarding existing security protocols, including response measures and coordination with local security services.
As recovery of stolen goods in such incidents is often limited, jewellers may need to evaluate the role of preventive security measures and insurance arrangements.
