In a remarkable testament to South African talent and tenacity, Johannesburg jeweller Nqobile Nkosi has been spotlighted on the Brand South Africa website, an initiative dedicated to showcasing and uplifting the country’s standing in the global arena.

Born and raised in Soweto, Nkosi’s post-matric ambitions to study electrical engineering were thwarted by financial constraints, a reality all too familiar for many of our young people. However, an opportunity in jewellery studies, backed by a bursary, set him on an unexpected path. Nkosi embraced the craft, further honing his skills with an internship in the UK before establishing NQ Jewellery in 2007.

His dedication and unique approach to jewellery design, characterised by simplicity and elegance with a distinctive African flair, quickly garnered attention. Recognition through awards and international showcases, including the notable Spring Fair International in Birmingham, propelled Nkosi into the industry’s spotlight.

    Empowering Future Craftsmen

Nkosi’s impact extends beyond his creations. Stationed at the Jewellery Village as part of the Refinery’s initiative since 2015, he not only manufactures exquisite pieces but also dedicates himself to mentoring budding jewellers. His efforts in nurturing new talent and providing platforms for emerging designers are crucial in a landscape seeking to diversify and expand its creative output.

Furthermore, NQ Jewellery collaborates with universities, offering graduates invaluable work experience in the UK jewellery market. Nkosi’s enterprise also guides up-and-coming SMMEs through regulatory compliance processes, ensuring alignment with South African Precious Metal regulations.

His success underscores the importance of platforms like the Proudly SA’s Buy Local Summit, which provided him with essential exposure, networking, and collaborative opportunities. Today, Nkosi’s creations are a testament to South African craftsmanship, available at the Jewellery Village in Montecasino, Johannesburg.

Brand South Africa: Elevating National Pride

Brand South Africa plays a pivotal role in this narrative. The organisation is committed to promoting and enhancing South Africa’s global reputation. Its focus extends to highlighting the country’s competitive strengths and unifying image, contributing to long-term investment, tourism, and international relations strategies.

Nqobile Nkosi’s story is not just one of personal triumph but is also a beacon of hope for aspiring jewellers and entrepreneurs across South Africa. It underscores the potential lying within the nation’s vibrant and diverse talent pool. As Nkosi himself concludes, “As a proud South African, I feel that it’s my duty and an honour to help give others a chance at success whenever I can. It draws us all together as a community, making us stronger. Jobs are more precious than ever, and it’s up to each of us to try and make a difference.”
